ACE Schools are excited to invite applications for the role of Advtech Schools Curriculum and Assessment Specialist (Mathematics and English Home Language)Based at The IIE’s head office in Sandton, this role will support the ACE School team.


The purpose of the job:
The Assessment Designer and Moderator is responsible for the design, development, moderation, and quality assurance for‑ annual common assessments and examinations for Mathematics and English Home Language and First Additional languages (Grades 4–9) across Advtech Schools in South Africa and Africa. The incumbent will lead a coordinate of teachers that produces assessment papers and detailed memoranda that meet the cognitive, pedagogical, and ethical standards of the group.

The curriculum support role ensures alignment with the CAPS curriculum, IEB SAGS, Cambridge and Advtech’s international schools assessment guidelines maintaining Advtech’s academic standards, and best practice in assessment principles.

Main Outputs and Responsibilities for this Position:

Assessment Design and Development

  • Design and develop inclusive annual common assessments and examinations for:
    • Mathematics Grades 4–9
    • English Home Language Grades 4–9
    • First Additional Languages Grade 4-9
  • Create clear, accurate, and comprehensive memoranda, including marking guidelines and cognitive level breakdowns, supportive of LSEN.
  • Ensure assessments align with:
    • CAPS, IEB and Cambridge requirements
    • Advtech Schools standards
    • Advtech International Schools curriculum standards
    • Age-appropriate cognitive‑ expectations
    • Inclusion support for LSEN
    • Assessment best practice
  • Use appropriate assessment techniques, ensuring validity, reliability, fairness, and inclusivity.

 Moderation and Quality Assurance

  • Moderate assessment papers and memoranda to:
    • Ensure curriculum alignment
    • Verify cognitive balance
    • Check accuracy and clarity
    • Eliminate ambiguity, bias, or errors
  • Participate in internal and external moderation cycles following Advtech protocols.
  • Ensure assessments maintain consistency across schools in the Advtech network.

 Collaboration and Communication

  • Work with subject specialists, cluster academic leaders, and teachers across various schools.
  • Provide constructive feedback on assessment drafts and assist in standardisation processes.
  • Planning assessment creation sessions, workshops, and moderation meetings as needed.

 Assessment Administration Support

  • Contribute to the development of:
  1. Assessment frameworks
  2. Blueprints and cognitive weighting documents
  3. Marking guidelines and standardisation tools
  4. Data capturing tools
  • Support schools with queries relating to interpretation and marking of common assessments.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in education (B. Ed) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with a specialization in Mathematics and/or English.
  • Minimum 8 years’ teaching experience in the Intermediate Phase and/or Senior Phase and school leadership experience, as an HOD or Deputy Head Academics.
  • Proven experience in assessment design and moderation, including examinations, tests, rubrics, and memoranda.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum assessment taxonomies (e.g., Bloom’s), and examination protocols.
  • Excellent written communication and curriculum interpretation skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Word and digital platforms used for assessment development, including use of an LMS.
  • Experience with moderation and standardisation processes (advantageous).
  • Experience teaching within an independent school context (advantageous).
  • Experience with data analytics and reporting.
